The Eora people, the Aborigines who settled around Sydney Harbour, arrived approximately 50,000 years ago, while the earliest white settlers arrived in 1788. This is Sydney's oldest historical area, located directly under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, in the centre of the city… and well worth a visit on your Australia vacation.

 5. Bondi beach had a Black Sunday On 6 February 1938, three large waves rolled into Bondi Beach in quick succession. As they receded, hundreds of swimmers were swept out to sea in the backwash. By good fortune, almost 80 members of the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club were gathered on the beach in readiness for a competition. Suddenly they were faced with the real thing. Between them, they rescued more than 250 swimmers, which was a remarkable achievement. Unfortunately and despite their best efforts, five swimmers drowned.
